Before you go
Closed in winter: Graubünden's road office says it can often open by the end of April, and it shuts by November or December at the latest. The Italian side is narrow with tight hairpins, so take it slowly.
Which way round
North to south: up from Splügen, then down the hairpins to Chiavenna.
When it’s open
Usually open May to Nov. Opening depends on the snow, so check the status before you go.
